The History of Japanese Photo Magazines is a one-hundred-year narrative told through camera and photography magazines. This book traces how magazine publications continually served as a genre-defining platform, starting with early and pre-war fine-art photography, and continuing through to the dawn of photography as a medium-specific pursuit in the modern era, and the post-war period of expanded media and consumerism. In a complex and interwoven network, influential editors, designers, and writers were integral players that gave shape to the work of photographers. For example, Shoji Yamagishi, through his editorial stewardship at Camera Mainichi, launched the careers of Daido Moriyama, Masahisa Fukase, Yutaka Takanashi among numerous others. As a result, the Japanese photobooks that have come to be recognized as masterpieces have their origins in the magazine world. In the post-war period, Japan’s publishing juggernaut was fueled by post-war recovery and hyper-consumerism, giving magazines broad readerships. With access to mass media, the conditions were ideal for photographers to come into their own and establish what we now understand to be the defining characteristics of Japanese photography. In many instances, photographers launched their own magazines, serving as editors and publishers, underscoring the significance of magazines to Japanese photography.
With authoritative texts and never-before-archived information, this publication expands the discourse on Japanese photography with a broad selection of magazines, photographers, and over 900 illustrations. Several case studies trace the development of magazine serializations to completed photobooks.
RYUICHI KANEKO is one of the founding curators of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. He is an expert on Japanese photography and Japanese photobooks and is the author of numerous books on the subject. Kaneko was a contributing author to The History of Japanese Photography (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 2003), Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s & ’70s (Aperture, 2009), Ueda Shoji: Photography Technique / We are all Amateurs! (Korinsha, 1999), and is the editor of the forthcoming anthology Shomei Tomatsu: Writings (Goliga, 2019).
MASAKO TODA is a photo historian, author, and curator of Japanese photography. She holds a masters from The University of Tokyo, Department of Humanities and Sociology. Toda is a lecturer at Musashino Art University, Tokyo College of Photography, among others. In 2006, she was awarded the incentive award by the Japan Society for Arts and History of Photography. Toda’s field of expertise is the history of modernism as well as postwar Japanese photography. Forthcoming publications include an essay in Akihiko Okamura (Akaaka, 2019) and her original research on photographer Koichi Sako (Goliga, 2019).
IVAN VARTANIAN has edited and authored numerous books on photography and art, including Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s & ’70s (Aperture, 2009), Setting Sun: Writings by Japanese Photographers (Aperture, 2005), among others.
